Governance Issue of the Week

What is your view on how participatory budgeting should work in practice? Here is our view.

The Governance International Participatory Budgeting Principles

(1) PB cannot be and must not be ‘representative’ (but must be ‘inclusive’)!
(2) Elected politicians must play a positive role in PB – but PB should not be about ‘party politics’
(3) Capacity-building: train your councillors, not your citizens
(4) Go where people are, do not make people come to you
(5) Keep PB interesting and change the focus from time to time
(6) PB does not need to take place every year – every second or third year may be good enough
(7) PB should focus on strategic priorities – both at council and neighbourhood levels

If you want to learn more about the PB activities of Governance International have a look at our brochure (.pdf).

Key Products

"Our products fill your requirements for: diagnosis - activation - learning - training - information"

Governance Health Checks - provide a diagnosis for a public or nonprofit agency and its partner organisations showing which areas of governance most need to be changed. More details.

Governance Activation Workshops - bring together the organisation and its key stakeholders to achieve some 'quick wins' by tapping innovative solutions from elsewhere. Ideally, they build on the results of the Governance Health Check but strengths and weaknesses can also be identified through other mechanisms, such as the CPA in the UK. More details.

Governance Study Visits - offer an international site visit and 'masterclass' programme to sustain and build on governance improvement by tapping transferable lessons from good governance practices elsewhere. More details.

Governance Training Courses - give managers and politicians an increased understanding of the importance of public governance. They explain what governance means, demonstrate good practice in governance and help participants to understand the elements of the GI Good Governance Model. More details.

GI Publications on Governance - provide case studies on good governance practices around the world, and practical guides on how to activate specific types of governance improvement. More details.
